our Story

Frolic Coffee is a small, family business — started by husband and wife Logan and Renee Byrd in 2017. We run our pop-up-shop alongside Logan’s parents, the irreplaceable Tim and Jill Byrd.

Logan and Renee have both worked in the food and beverage industry for over 13 years and are self-described foodies (Renee having an internationally renowned food blog). Logan spent years studying the art of coffee roasting, rigorously testing roasts until his high standards were finally met.

In 2017 we started selling our coffee at Charlottesville City Market — running our business from beneath the humble awnings of our 10x10 pop up tent on Saturdays and Wednesdays. These days you can find us at IX Farmers Market in Downtown Charlottesville every Saturday from April to December.

Our mission at Frolic is to simplify world-class coffee, providing roasts that both hipsters and grandpas rave about. That’s not to say we don’t like our coffee with a side of fun — we’re all about the joy of the brew.

Stick around, explore our coffee, have a laugh.

And frolic often!

OUR COFFEE

Our focus is super small-batch, light roasts of Organic, high-end coffees. We tend to source our beans from either Ethiopia, Honduras, or Peru. We make a point to buy top lots, professionally graded for their quality and flavor profiles, seeking out the best-of-the-best.

We delicately roast our coffees with a fluid-bed air roaster — a small machine that allows for refined, detailed control over our roasts. This helps us coax out more precise, nuanced, and subtle flavor profiles than a typical drum roaster.

For our Ethiopian beans, we typically source natural-process coffees, which means the green coffee beans are fermented with their fruit pulp left on the bean. This produces sweeter, richer, more fruity coffees. We’re big fans of flavor top-notes like blueberry, blackberry jam, red currant — and flavor low-notes like chocolate, cinnamon, and bourbon vanilla. We recommend these beans for hot brewing with machines, Chemex, or pour-overs.

For our Peruvian or Honduran beans, we roast these to a light-medium roast profile. These beans have a flavor profile more like a classic coffee and are our staple bean for the cold brew we sell at farmers markets. We recommend these beans for hot brewing, especially for espresso, or for cold brewing at home.

And hey, you might notice that we’re not as expensive as our competitors. That’s because we run a tight ship and cut out excess expenses so that we can pass the savings on to you.
